Tropical Storm Fay rolled ashore in Florida Tuesday short of hurricane strength, but mysteriously gained speed as it headed over land, bringing heavy rain, high wind and tornadoes.
The storm dumped knee-deep water in some streets, downed trees and plunged 58,000 homes and businesses into the dark. A tornado ripped through Brevard County, damaging 51 homes, nine severely. But overall, residents said it wasn't as bad they feared. 'Boomerang' Fay gains strength over Florida |

Beijing was finally experiencing clear skies today after city authorities apparently used seeding technology to disperse the smog. The report came as a strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the western Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Gansu today, near the site of May's devastating quake that killed at least 70,000 people, the U.S. Geological Survey said. In the meantime, Olympic chiefs remained more concerned with smog, fearing the high level of pollution, which is 10 times that in London, would cast a pall over the Games. Some of the Gulf's offshore oil and natural gas drilling platforms sit in the storm's path. But Edouard is not likely to disrupt production, according to one financial firm that specializes in the energy industry. "He'll just be (a) little tropical storm tike compared to big mamma's that rip things up and spike gas prices," the Houston-based securities firm Tudor Pickering Holt & Co. said in a note to investors Monday. A powerful typhoon lashed Taiwan with strong winds and heavy rains Monday, disrupting air traffic and triggering landslides and floods that killed at least one man in the southeastern part of the island. Typhoon Fung Wong hit Taiwan just before dawn, packing winds of 105 miles per hour. It left the island, heading for the Chinese mainland, about nine hours later. Television images showed rescue personnel wading through waist-deep waters to extricate people from their homes in Hualien in eastern Taiwan, where the typhoon made landfall.
